Update 11/07/2020: This fix did not hold up. It slowed the leak down significantly, to the point of needing more Freon approximately every 3 months. No leak detected from the back end, but rather, the front end of the expansion valve, which to me suggests the clamp was not tight enough. I no longer own the vehicle and will not be revisiting this anytime soon unless I come across a vehicle that is a good candidate for this. If you want to try this on your own I would suggest using 2 plates of steel or perhaps a section of angle iron to get more torque on the nuts without the cross member flexing.

The problem is that the AC lines on the expansion valve do not tightly seal against the expansion valve, which can cause freon to leak out. If you attempt to tighten them up, you risk stripping the threads in the valve. While the valve is inexpensive, if you damage the lines coming out the back of it in the process of removal, you could potentially have to take the dash apart to replace them. Damaging the lines upon removal is not uncommon, as there is typically a lot of corrosion around the brass. This vehicle is a prime example, as it has only had one owner. The fix I show could have easily been designed by Volkswagen engineers, but apparently they don’t care about their customers and want to extort them with exorbitant repair costs from a dealership.
